Credit card surcharge

Updated October 19, 2026 in Payments and fraud

Turn it on and set it under Store Info & Surcharge (left menu, under System), in the Credit Card Surcharge box. The Settings, Payment tab shows whether it is on, with a button that takes you there.

  • It adds a percent to orders paid with a credit card only. Debit and prepaid cards are never charged; the card is checked automatically.
  • The percent is numbers only and cannot go above 3.00%, the card network limit. If something other than a number is typed, your last saved percent is kept.
  • States listed under Billing states that get no surcharge are never charged. Connecticut, Massachusetts and Puerto Rico are listed by default.
  • The fee shows as its own line before Place Order and on the receipt.

Important: Before you turn it on, your processor must file the 30 day surcharge notice with Visa and Mastercard. Ask your processor to do this first.
