A shopper is paused at checkout after card declines

Updated October 19, 2026 in Payments and fraud

When a shopper has several cards declined in a row (four within an hour), checkout pauses for them. This stops people testing stolen cards on your site. A real customer can get caught by it too, usually because their own bank declined the charge.

  1. Open Abandoned in your admin menu (Abandoned Carts and Failed Checkouts).
  2. At the top, Paused at checkout lists everyone paused right now: their name, email, how many declines, the card's last four digits and when the pause lifts on its own.
  3. If you know the shopper, click Reset attempts. They can try again right away.

Their cart stays saved to their account, so when they sign in again it is still there.

Note: Declines come from the shopper's bank, not from your store. Before they try again, ask them to call the number on the back of their card or approve the charge in their bank app, or use a different card. If their bank declines four more times, the pause comes back.
