Why hazmat items are not sold on your store
Primers, powder and percussion caps are hazmat. Trinity keeps them off your website and off GunBroker, and catches the ones a distributor forgot to mark.
Primers, smokeless powder, black powder and its substitutes, and percussion caps are hazardous materials ("hazmat") in the eyes of the shipping carriers. They need a hazmat shipping agreement with your carrier and extra fees on every package, and one sold by mistake usually loses money once the hazmat charges land.
So Trinity keeps them off your store.
What Trinity does
- Hazmat items are held out of stock. They do not show as available on your website.
- They stay off GunBroker. If a GunBroker listing exists for a hazmat item, Trinity ends it.
- Trinity reads the product title too. Distributor feeds do not always mark an item as hazmat. Trinity looks for the consumables by name (primers by size or count, smokeless powder, black powder and substitutes such as Pyrodex, Triple Seven or pellets, and percussion or musket caps) and marks them hazmat itself. It only ever adds the mark; it never removes one that was set by hand.
Tools and accessories that only mention primers or powder (priming tools, powder measures, trays, books and so on) and loaded ammunition are not treated as hazmat, so they still sell normally.
The setting
This is the HazMat Products box on your Settings page, with the option Sell HazMat products on my store. It is off on every store unless it has been turned on, and we recommend leaving it off.
Your Terms and Conditions
Your Terms and Conditions already tell customers that hazmat items are not offered for sale online, and that if one is ever listed or ordered by mistake you will contact them before anything ships. If that happens, see The Awaiting Hazmat Approval status.
