Set up NoFraud fraud screening

Updated October 30, 2026 in Orders and fulfillment

NoFraud checks every card order before it ships and takes the chargeback risk on the orders it passes. Sign up with NoFraud, paste one API key into your store, turn screening on. Here is what it does, what it costs you to skip it, and where the key goes.

A fraud chargeback costs you the goods, the shipping, and your card processor's dispute fee, and firearms stores see more card fraud than most. NoFraud screens every credit card order on your store before anyone ships it, and for the orders it passes it covers the chargeback if it was wrong. Your store has the connection built in; it needs your own NoFraud account and one key.

What it does on your store

  1. A customer checks out and the card is charged through your processor.
  2. Your store sends NoFraud the order details: billing and shipping addresses, the card's identifying details, the customer's IP address and device.
  3. NoFraud answers within seconds:
    • Pass: the order carries on as normal.
    • Review: the order is placed on hold (status Do Not Ship - HOLD) with a note, while NoFraud looks closer, usually by contacting the customer. See "Orders held for fraud review".
    • Fail: the payment is voided and the order is cancelled, so no goods go out and nothing stays charged.
  4. The decision is kept on the order, so you can always see why an order was held or cancelled.

Orders paid in person or by phone are not screened; only card orders placed on the website.

Sign up with NoFraud

  1. Go to nofraud.com and ask for an account. Tell them your store runs on Trinity and that the integration is API based. NoFraud charges a percentage of screened sales with a monthly minimum; ask them for current pricing before you sign.
  2. When your account is open, sign in to the NoFraud Portal at portal.nofraud.com, open Integrations, and copy your API key. It starts with NF_.

Turn it on in your store

  1. In your admin, open NoFraud in the left menu (Settings area), the page admin/nofraud-settings.php.
  2. Paste the key into API Key and tick Screening Active. Save.
  3. The page shows your last 20 screenings as they happen, so after the first few card orders you can see Pass, Review and Fail decisions arriving.

The key is stored on your store only and is never shown in full again on the page; to change it, paste a new one.

Day to day

  • Do not ship an order while it shows Do Not Ship - HOLD. NoFraud usually clears or declines a review within a few hours; the order's status changes by itself.
  • An order NoFraud declined has already been voided. If the customer gets in touch, you can point them to their bank; nothing was taken.
  • If you turn screening off, orders flow as before, with no check. Turn it back on from the same page.

If you would rather not use NoFraud

Your store still records the customer's IP address and address match results on every card order, and you can hold any order by hand from the order page. The Fraud chapter of the Getting Started guide covers what to look for.
